Yahoo! Sports : Why Figure Skating is Not A Sport

This article talks about why figure skating is not a sport.

Sooo, by his logic, Division I-A college football isn't a sport either. All of the people who determine the championship (or computers whose algorithm had to be written by someone) are not players...they are pretty much judges too. The BCS is like that horrible French judge from a few years back...

Madden 06 is almost a sport.

As animated as I am when I play, it may as well be...

Actually, this guy's opinion is way off too because figure skating is really not a subjective sport anymore (gymnastics never was).

Figure skating is now scored on a direct point system. You get X points for a triple lutz, Y points for a spiral, etc. Judges also use instant replay to see if any deductions need to be taken. Much like gymnastics, a point total isn't arrived to just because a judge likes a particular athlete. It's because that athelte's mathematical score of their routine was higher than the other competitors. Just as in basketball where MD can beat Duke 98-81 ;), Sasha Cohen can beat Irina Slutskya 101-99.

If that's not a quantifiable way to decide a winner, then I don't know what is.

It's a good thing that basketball is scored objectively...if it wasn't Maryland would never beat Duke. No one would.
